Writing and Interview by Imke van Schaaijk
Andrea and Daniele Calsolaro are twin brothers from Italy. Drawing and painting has always been their passion and since a few years they are elevating this passion to a serious level. Calsolaro Art is much of an unrealistic expressional and abstract art with human beings portraits and landscapes in the leading role. The work of the brothers is characterized by the influences of their young, but turbulent life.

The twins were born in 1983 in a commune near the jungles of Bangladesh, where their parents at that time were doing voluntary work. Their childhood is characterized by many moves. The brothers never lived long in one place. At the age of four they moved with their parents from Bangladesh to Nepal and after that they have lived in different communes in Italy and Switzerland. The first period of stability in their lives they got during the 5-year Art school", they followed at the Liceo Artistico in Verona (1999-2003). Besides making sculptures and other art they specialized mainly in drawing portraits and paintings.

A first visit to the Netherlands in 2007 makes the brothers so enthusistic that since then are still living and working in the city of Utrecht.

Drawing and painting has always been their great love.
The choice to work together to make art is not a surprise. Since when they were children, Andrea and Daniele do a lot together and have similar interests.
The brothers were always in competition. They would chose a topic and then both went to separate rooms to draw. After that they determined together who had made the best drawing. That competition between the two is now over, but still Andrea and Daniele attach great importance to the opinions of each other.

The Calsolaro brothers have been travelling and moving a lot and are not yet done with travelling. They are always looking for changes: Searching for the world. Probably because of this the brothers are multiple-sided artists. Besides their own paintings they create portraits, photography, wall paintings, book illustrations, logo designs, video editing, body paintings...etc. Much of these are done in commission.

A lot of the paintings are done together, working on the same canvas, or in turns. either way they share their ideas to arrive to a final result. Their own art can be very realistic but also abstract. Often trying to combine the both together. In realistic paintings they can work a lot on details and spend a lot of hours on it, other paintings are done instead in a very short amount of time.
Portrait paintings are mostly of faces and nudes. They are fascinated from these expressions, body forms and the skins lights and shadows. To create the painting they photograph specific models and reproduce them in their style on canvas. There is always a composition idea, its often sketched out on paper before starting the work.

Now the Calsolaro brothers are at the begin of their professional artistic careers. Much is still experimented by them. Because of their background, they accustomed to never stop and this is reflected in their work, the canvases give vitality but also painting styles are changed often and new ideas come in.
Besides the individual style of the brothers, in the Calsolaro Art paintings you see repeated use of blue and red, the favorite colors of the twins, mostly oil paint is used. In addition, they are always looking for something truly innovative.
The paintings of the Calsolaro brothers are a reflection of their feelings and fantasies. Mainly positive. Inspirations come from anything but especially if it's original, if it's something that is far from what is usual.
